Creative Export Canada

Creative Export Canada (CEC) Provides Support To Help Creative Industries Shine On The World Stage

Creative Export Canada is a highly competitive program that offers to fund creative industry projects that generate export revenue. It raises the visibility of Canadian creative industries in the international market and also increases export profitability. The Canadian government supports industries to achieve their global market goals through the Creative Export Strategy.

This strategy has three main goals:

  • Increase export funding through existing Canadian Heritage projects such as the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Book Fund, the Canada Music Fund, the Canada Periodical Fund, and Telefilm Canada
  •  Strengthen Canadian creative industries by funding export-ready ventures and establishing the relationships required to make business deals
  •  Increase and boost Canada's creative industries' international presence

Regarding this, The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, says:

As our creative industries continue to maximize their export potential, the Creative Export Canada program provides the support to help them shine on the world stage. Canadians are known for their expertise and strengths in all facets of culture, and we are proud to support this key sector of the Canadian economy.

Who can Apply For Creative Export Canada (CEC)?

As mentioned earlier, this program is highly competitive, and only a limited number of projects are eligible for this grant annually. The government has established eligibility requirements for this fund, and your company/organization must meet them to apply.

These applicant eligibilities include:

  • Be owned and operated by Canadians;
  • Be  incorporated under Canadian, provincial, or territorial laws;
  • To have a maximum annual income of 500 million dollars;
  • If it's a for-profit or a non-profit organization
  • you must have at least one full-time employee

Individuals, businesses who have secured other grants for their projects, and businesses that operate under the parent company and gain more than $ 500 million a year are not eligible to apply for this program.

However, it is better to know that the number of funding requests is much more than the Creative Export Canada Program's annual budget. So if you have applied, it does not mean receiving funding. So let's see what projects are eligible to get this grant.

Eligible projects for Creative Export Canada

If you have the criteria approved by the government to take advantage of creative export Canada, this alone is not enough. Since the projects must be approved for this grant, and not all creative industry projects are accepted.

Your projects must meet the following criteria:

  1. Support one or more of the creative industries mentioned below:
    • Performing arts
    • Urban design
    • Public art design
    • Artistic product design
    • Fashion design
    • Exhibit design
    • Publishing
    • Audiovisual
    • Music
    • Visual art
    • Interactive digital media
  2. Expect to make new export earnings
  3. Have a minimum overall expense of $300,000
  4. be ready for export (content* is ready to be marketed, export research/plan is fully developed)
  5. To be financed by private sources at least 25%

Do your projects have all these requirements? If yes, then you are fortunate because you will most likely be able to take advantage of the Creative Industries Fund to expand your business in the global arena.

Even so, the important thing to note is that your content must have intellectual property rights. Otherwise, according to the Department of Canadian Heritage, your projects will not be eligible to apply. So you have to choose the right path to achieve your goals.

Eligible Expenses To Be Covered Under Creative Export Canada

You will think that this fund would cover all the project costs, but that is not true. Only project-related cash costs are eligible to be supported under the Creative Export Canada funding program.

These may include:

  • Marketing expenses;
  • the acquisition of digital or other types of technology;
  • costs related to general office supplies, mailing, and cloud storage(limited to a maximum of 15%)
  • Project-related translation costs (limited to 10%)
  • Technical services or part of the salary of workers directly connected to the project;  and
  • Travel expenses that are precisely in line with the project;

However, this funding will not cover ongoing operational expenditure, content creation, preparation of business plan costs, hospitality, and in-kind costs. Well, if you have all the above requirements, now is the time to apply for this fund, but how?
